FORM AND FUNCTION
FORM refers to the shape of an object.
FUNCTION refers to the use of an object.
FORM AND FUNCTION and function refers to the RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE USE OF THE CONTAINER AND IT’S SHAPE.
Simply put, in functional ceramics, WHAT a container is used for determines it’s SHAPE.
The form is determined by the function. For example, a coffee mug has a shape that fits into a person’s hand easily, has thick walls to keep the heat in the coffee and has a lip that makes drinking hot liquid easy and spill-free.
A container with a long, thin neck, a bulbous body and a handle may be used to pour liquid in a slow manner. Olive oil is often kept in such containers that have long necks and small openings to slow down the pouring speed. Iced tea kept in such a container would be an annoyance; iced tea is kept in a pitcher with a wide mouth, a lip to keep in the ice and a sturdy handle.
The form of the projects that you will be creating will be determined by how you plan to use your pottery.
PROMPT #1
- Look at the pottery on the right.
- Choose 5 pieces of pottery and describe the function for which you think they have been designed.
- Explain your thinking for each piece - what about the pottery makes you think it is designed for a specific use?
- Remember....5 sentences minimum!
PROMPT #2
- Look at the pottery on the right.
- Choose three pieces of pottery.
- Describe the function of each piece of pottery - be specific!
- Describe what you could do to each piece to change the function dramatically.
PROMPT #3
- Sometimes when functional potters create their artwork, they treat their pottery almost as if it were a sculpture - and the function becomes secondary to the sculptural aspects of the pottery.
- If you were a potter, what would you want to do with your artwork - Would you focus mostly on the functional aspects of your pottery or the sculptural aspects of your pottery?
- What is your thinking behind this decision?
- How would you market your work? Would you market yourself as a functional or sculptural ceramic artist?
PROMPT #4
- If you were going to design a piece of pottery that had a distinct but unusual function - AND had a unique sculptural aspect - what would you create?
- For what function or use would your pottery be designed?
- What kind of sculptural aspects would your pottery have?
- Describe this imaginary piece of pottery in as much detail as possible!

The first piece of work I saw was a vase it is used for flowers or decorations I know I would not use it for flowers I would use it for something else . I could change it by putting more detail on it.
The next piece I saw was a tea kettle I t’s is pretty. It could be used for tea and even for decoration. I would change it by adding a lot of color to it makes it darker like dark red.
The next piece I saw was cookie tractor jar. Now this is amazing because this different looking I would not change anything about this. I know this would be used for cookies I think many people could use it for different things such as putting cash into it. Or lose change.
The one piece of work I saw which was the crystalline green vase it was made for decoration I think because it is way to nice to put anything in it I believe .
The 2nd piece of work I saw was the wave blue basket . I think this could be used for many different things I would use it for rings or hair ties or something else I know I would not put food in it at all .
The 3rd piece of work I saw was the Gary Jackson vase I think back in the day people would have used this for drinking water to get the water.
The 4th piece of work I found was the round texture vase I think some people used this for putting jewelry in it.
The last piece of work I saw was the Nathan vase . I am not sure what people would use this for . To scare away sprits ?

Prompt #2: The three pieces of artwork I chose are the animal pitcher, the Einstein teapot, and the stacked cups. The animal pitcher is in the shape of some animal kind of looking like an anteater. The animal is sitting and the whole top of the head is an opening for the pitcher. I could change this into a jug easily by just changing the top of the animals head into a small round opening instead of the large one. This would completely change the function of the pottery. The next piece was the Einstein teapot. This is a very detailed piece of artwork that could be changed into an African face jug. Taking away the handle, the spout, and changing the opening in the top could transform this piece. The last one I chose was the stacked cups. Looking at these cups I saw that I could connect all of them and take off the bottoms of all of the cups beside the ones on the bottom and always making a hole in one of the branches, this could create a spout for an oddly shaped teapot!
Prompt #3: I think that if I was a potter I would focus on the sculptural aspects of my piece before even thinking about what I could do to make it a functioning piece. I think that looking at a detailed nearly finished piece would be a lot easier to see what I could take away or add in to make it useful in some way. It may be different for others but I just would find it a lot easier rather than making a functioning piece of pottery and making it look like something else. I’d want to make it look like something, then make it functional.

Prompt #1
The “Woven Blue Basket” piece of pottery seems as if it could be used to hold a candle. It’s flat and curved on the side which is what candle plates normally look like. The Sandi Pierantozzi pottery looks like a tea pot. I’d say this because it has a long thin spout, it has a handle, and the pot turns in as it gets taller. These features remind me of a teapot. The ceramic tractor looks like a cookie jar. I’d say this because there is a lid on the top so you could put cookies in it. The organic vase pottery looks like a vase for flowers. One reason why I think this is because it’s long and tall. The pottery also looks like a rose itself. The seed pod ceramic looks like a candle holder. I say this because there are holes in which the light could shine through and the ceramic is made with a space inside perfect for a candle.
Prompt #3
If I were a potter I’d choose to be a sculptural ceramic artist. I would like to focus more on sculpture instead of function because I think when you have set in your mind something needs a purpose, it limits your possibilities. I believe that if I was focused on making my pottery able to do something, it wouldn’t look as good as I could make it. My sculptures could still have a function to them, but their function wouldn’t be my first priority. If the sculpture begins as something simple, it’s easier to make it into something more complex and interesting if I’m not focused on making sure my handle is able to be comfortably held. Also if pottery is shown to have a function, most likely you won’t be as careful with it as you would if it was more for show. I think my sculptures would break more easily because one wouldn’t be as cautious when handling them since they were meant to be used.

Prompt #3
If I were a potter, I would want to create pots that had a functional use, that way I could use all of my creations. Although I would focus on making the pots to fit their use I would also want to incorporate interesting new ways to shape the pots, while keeping in mind their purpose. I could market my products as beautiful yet useful pieces of pottery. My thinking behind this idea is that people would be more interested in buying pots that look interesting but are for more than just decoration. Also, people would prefer more beautiful tools to use (like pitchers) as opposed to plain ones.
Prompt #4
The Volkolv teapot of Einstein was clearly created to be used as a teapot; the snake on the side of Einstein’s head is to be used as a spout and the E=Mc2 is the handle. The Teco Pottery Organic Vase is used to hold a flower which is why it has a long neck (to hold the stems) and a round full bottom (to hold the water for the flowers). The animal pitcher was made to pour cooler drinks because it has a larger spout as opposed to a tea pot which has a smaller spout for hotter liquids. The stacked cups purpose is simply to be used as cups they were clearly designed however to be more decorative which is more appealing to a buyer. The Sandi Pierantozzi tea pot is clearly used for handling hotter liquids because it has a longer skinnier spout which indicates that it holds hot liquids.
Taylor Cutcliff
Prompt #3
If I was a potter, I would focus mainly on the sculptural aspects of my pottery. I would do this because the sculptural aspects are what catches a person's eye. If it doesn't look appealing, a person would pass right over it. I would market myself as a sculptural ceramic artist. This is because my sculptures would be meant for display, and not for use.
Prompt #1
The Teco Pottery Organic Vase looks like it could be used as a cup. It kind of looks like one of those old, medieval cups that they used to us. The Melstrom Cyrstaline Glaze Green Vase is a vase for flowers. I know this because it is wide at the bottom and gets skinnier at the top. The Sandi Pierantozzi Teapot is a teapot. I can tell by the long spout and the handle. The Animal Pitcher looks like it would be a pitcher for water or lemonade. I can tell by the extended opening and handle. The Woven Blue Basket looks like a basket for a display of fruits. It looks like something a bunch of apples would sit in.
Cecelia Walsh
Prompt #2
The function of the animal pitcher is to pour liquids out slowly. To change it dramatically, all I would have to do is make the opening bigger, which would cause liquids to pour out a lot faster. The function of the woven blue basket is to hold small things like pocket change, car keys, etc. To change it dramatically I could make it flat. If it were flat it would be more like a coaster for a cup. The teco pottery organic vase seems like its function is to hold flowers. To change the function I could make the vase shorter. If the vase were shorter it function would probably be used to hold small things like loose change.
Prompt #3
I would probably focus more on the functional aspects. My thinking behind this is I want my work to have a use as well. I don’t want my work to be made just to look pretty. I would market myself as a functional ceramic artist. I would do this because I would focus a lot on the function of my work.
Bridget O’Donnell
Prompt #3
If I was a potter, I would focus more on the sculptural aspects of my pottery because I think it will look more appealing to someone if they want it. It would make people have a better understanding of what the pot will look like when it is done. I would market my work as sculptural ceramic artist because I think it would make it nicer looking. I think it will help sell my pot. It would have designs on it and make it more appealing.
Prompt # 2
The three pieces of pottery I choose were the Teco Pottery Organic Vase, Einstein teapot, and the Animal Pitcherit. The Teco pottery organic vase looks like a flower to me. If I were to change it I would make it look like a face jug by putting arms and a head on it with features. The other piece of pottery I choose was the Einstein teapot it has a lot of detailed in it and I would make it into another face jug. This would be easier than the other one because it already has a face already. The last one I choose was the animal pitcherit it looks like an armadillo. I would change it by taking off the handle.
Bettina Bowers
PROMPT #3
If I were a potter, I would mainly focus on the sculptural aspects of my work. I would do this because there are so many different shapes and ways to sculpt pottery. I could make my pottery tall and thin, rounded with a short neck, and so much more. I would market my work as both a sculptural and functional ceramic. Though I would mostly focus on the sculptural aspects, I would want the function to vary so that it appeals to a larger audience.
PROMPT #4
If I were going to design a piece of pottery, I would try to make it as unique as possible. I would make a small jug to act as some type of watering can for a garden. It would have a lid that you could put on and take off so that you could fill it up with water. Also, it would have a spout to pour the water out. The bottom of my jug would be wide and round, while the neck would long and curvy. Finally, I would carve flowers into the piece to tie it into the garden theme.
Alexia Rhodes
Prompt #2
The function of the first piece of pottery (Paperclay-Angela Mellor-Ocean light) can be thought of as a holder. The shape of the pottery looks like it would be used as a big bowl to hold things inside. Maybe things such as candy could be held inside the pottery. To this piece you could flatten it out and use it as a plate instead of a bowl. The second piece of pottery (Teco-Pottery-Organic Vase) could be used as a vase to hold things such as flowers since it is tall and somewhat wide. To change the function, you could shorten it and add a handle to use it as a mug to drink out of. The third pottery piece (Animal Pitcher) could be used to pour liquids out of such as iced tea. The spout on the pitcher could be taken off to change the function and then be used as a vase for flowers.
Prompt #3
If I was a potter that was making a new pot I wouldn’t care about the functional aspects of the piece of art. I think that the most important part of the pottery would be the sculptural aspects. I think this because if I were to make a piece of pottery I would want it to have a nice flowing sculptural point of view rather than worrying about how to use the piece. If I were a potter I would think this about all the different pieces of art I would make. If I were to buy a piece of pottery I would want it to be pretty and nice, I wouldn’t really care that much about how I would use the pottery because I could always just display it instead. If I were to market my work I would be a sculptural ceramic artist because looks are more important to me than how things would be used.
Claire R.
Prompt # 3
I think if I were a potter I would focus on both but the sculptural aspects more. I would do this because I feel that the piece doesn’t need to have a function it can just be a piece of art. I care more about the design of the piece and the colors and things more than how it could be used. I think that I would market myself as a sculptural ceramic artist because I would focus more on the way the pieces looked than how they would be used. I would just consider them a piece of art and that is really it.
Prompt #4
I think that if I was going to make an unusual sculpture I would make a piece that could that women could hang their bracelets and necklaces on. It would be about medium height and have pieces of long clay coming out around it almost like a tree and that is what you could hang your things from. It would be very color full and be very classy. It would be painted all black with some pink.
Kait Bevan
Prompt #2
The Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase is for slowly pouring liquids. If you make the top wider, then the liquid would pour faster. The tractor is a cute little cookie jar, but if you were to skip making a place for the cookies, you would have a cute figurine to put in a little boy’s room. The woven blue basket would be used to keys or pocket change—my favorite piece out of the bunch. In order to change the function, I would have made the basket taller and skinnier—then it could be used as a pencil holder.
Prompt #3
I would probably focus on the functional aspects of my pottery. There is always of someone looking for an interesting or abstract piece to place in their house. However, they don’t just want something to sit there; they usually want something that has a purpose to being there. I personally have that same method of thinking—what is the point of buying something if there isn’t a purpose for it being there. Therefore, I would market myself as a functional ceramic artist.
Emmie N.
Prompt #2
One piece of pottery I chose is the “Stacked Cups.” The function of the container appears to be used a flower vase because along the sides of the stacked cups are birds and tree branches, so the heads of the flower would complete the “tree” look. To change the function, I would get rid of the branches and birds, and then put a handle connecting all four stacked cups for it to be able to drink out of. Second piece of pottery I chose is the “Melstrom Crystalline Glaze Green Vase.” The function seems to hold and easily pour out a liquid due to the long neck and the small opening. To change the function, I would get rid of the long, narrow neck (or expand it) which would leave more room for it could be used to hold flowers. Third piece of pottery I chose is the “Animal Pitcher.” The function of the container is to pour out liquid due to the spout for easy pouring and handle for easy grip. To change the function, I would turn the pitcher into a cookie jar by removing the spout and handle then instead, put a larger opening and a lid.
PROMPT #3
If I were a potter, I would mostly focus on the sculptural aspects. The reason for my decision is because I believe the first detail people look at is if it’s appealing or not. Once people’s attention are drawn, then function comes into play. If I were to market myself, I would be a sculptural ceramic artist. The reason for this is because I would mostly focus on the sculptural aspects of my pottery.
Rob Doyle
Prompt #2:
Form and Function - Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase: This vase is used to display flowers, but is not like an ordinary clear vase that displays the stem of its flowers. This vase is not see-through and it is very tall, therefore little stem is shown, focusing all attention on the petals of the flower. If you were to give this vase a more see-through appearance, the stem would draw some attention and change the function of the vase.
Form and Function - Sandi Pierantozzi – Teapot: This teapot is used to hold and pour tea in small amounts. There is need for a larger pot to hold the full batch of tea, but this smaller pot is used for distributing the tea and looking classy with its while coloring and small patterns. If you were to increase the size of the pot, it would be much more practical, but also much less attractive.
Form and Function - Woven Blue Basket: This basket is made to be for show, but also hold items that are wrapped and big enough to not fall through the cracks, such as candies. If you were to make the basket more of a solid bowl, then it would not be so much for show, but more for holding items.
Prompt #3
If I was creating a piece of artwork, I would focus much more on the appearance rather than the function. I believe that to make the piece a true work of art, you must try to make it as appealing as possible. That is what separates a work of art from a tool. If I was professionally making works of art, I would consider myself to be a sculptural ceramic artist. Although function is important, in art, appearance is much more important.
Tyler DiMatteo
Prompt #2
The first piece of pottery I chose is the Stacked Cups. The function is that these cups are to be used for drinking. To change its function, I could take out the bottom of each cup, connect them together, and have the top cup sculpted into a thin neck to make it function as a unique vase. The second piece of pottery I chose is the Animal Pitcher. The function is that this pitcher can be used to pour liquid drinks, or it can be used to water plants. To change its function, I could make the animals neck longer and thinner with a small opening for its mouth to make it function as a container used to pour oil or gravy at a slower speed. The third piece of pottery I chose is the Ceramic Cookie Jar Tractor. The function is that this tractor is to be used to hold cookies. To change its function, I could make the lid of the jar one piece that's connected to the rest of the tractor, but the top of the lid will be open to put dirt into it to make it function as a planter.
Prompt #3
I would focus mostly on the sculptural aspects of my pottery. The functional aspects would be secondary. I'd do this because my main concern would be how detailed I'd want to make my piece look. The look of it would be most important to me. I think the functional aspect will develop once I have sculpted my piece the way I think it should look. I wouldn't want to limit myself by locking into one specific function for my sculpture. As I'm sculpting it, I might add things that would change the original function I had in mind. I would market myself as a sculptural ceramic artist.
Samm Brower
Prompt #3
I would focus on the sculptural aspect of the pottery because I would much rather make something that people would marvel at rather than just make an average everyday object in which people could easily never take a second glance at. If I was a functional artist I could make million by ways of patenting for my object of creation but therefore I would be an artist. I would be considered an inventor and I would much rather be considered an artist because inventors seem like scientific people. I tend to shy away from scientific people and I wouldn’t want to be one of them. I would market my work through auctions and shows.
Prompt #4
I would create a spoon because I think they are cool. A spoon has an unusual function because you eat with it and its round, therefore it is unusual. I would make the spoon a hand though because then you would be eating a hand. Some would be repulsed by it, but others would find it interesting. The hand would be oozing blood and even I would be disgusted by it. I would have cuts and green mold or certain places. The fingernails would be long and yellow and cracked. The main idea of the piece would be to freak a person out before they take a bite. It would be an unusually cool way to eat corn or some food of the sort.
Alison Ervin
Prompt #2
The function of the stacked cups is to hold drinks, especially hot ones, and to keep the heat inside the liquid. I would change these by combining them into one tall cylinder to use as a vase. The function of the Woven Blue Basket is to hold large, solid objects such as fruit. I would change it by attaching it onto a solid, plain-colored bowl to hold smaller objects or liquids like soup. The Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase is used as a vase to hold flowers. I would change this by cutting it off lower to make a bowl, and I would also most likely have to make it thicker. I would then use it in the same way as the modified Woven Blue Basket.
Prompt #3
I would most likely focus more on the functional aspect. I think this is because I crochet and knit. Most of these projects are functional, so I think it would be hard to re-program my brain to make more of a sculptural piece. I would market myself as a functional ceramic artist. There would be some design to my work, but the main focus would be functionality.
Kyle Klosinski
PROMPT #2
The three pieces of artwork i chose were Einstein, stacked cups, woven blue basket. The function the Einstein is to honor him and show what he taught everyone you could change the function by taking off the e=mc2. The function of the stacked cups is to show that each cup is a guy and a girl they represent a married couple in my opinion you could change each by taking off the birds.. The woven blue basket is meant to put things in you could change it by making it solid and no holes.
PROMPT #3
I would try and make it even but the function would be greater than the look. I would rather have something that works well and doesn't look good than one that looks good but does not function well. When people use things they shouldn't worry about how it looks rather how well it performs. I would market myself as a functional ceramic artist. I would make many face jugs and vases.
Jack Schott
Prompt #3
If I was a potter, I would focus on both functional and sculptural aspects. But I think I would focus on the sculpture aspects more. It would make it more appealing. I would make it very satisfying to the viewer also. I would market it as a sculptural ceramic artist because of the aspect I chose.
Prompt #4
I would make some type of vase with two handles attached. It would be for the sculptural function. It would be carved smoothly and well crafter. My audience would find comfort in its creativity. It would be tall and thin, with a glassy surface. The base and sides would be very smooth, and the top would be slightly off center to give my piece some style.
Colin Anglim
Prompt #3
If I was a potter I would focus on the sculptural aspects of my pottery. My thinking behind this decision is simple. I think I would focus on the sculptural aspects because my opinion is that it is what people would like to see in pottery and the pottery would stand out more. Another reason is because if I was selected to be in some type of competition I would want the judges to really look and study my piece. I would market my work as a sculptural artist. I would market myself a sculptural artist because that is what I would like to focus on and what I think is best for my pottery experience.
Prompt#4
If I were going to create a piece of pottery that had a distinct but unusual function I would create a volcano shaped piece of pottery. The function that I would use for this piece of pottery would be for a pitcher. I would sculpt some volcano aspects into it like some bumpy type of hills and some other volcano aspects. This piece of pottery would be a brownish color and have hardened lave all over to make it look real. This is what my piece of pottery would be.
Lisa Edwards
Prompt #3
If I was a potter, I would most likely focus on the sculptural aspects of the piece. I would do this because I like to focus on the creativity and visual aspects of a piece of work, instead of focusing on the function. I also do not use many ceramics pieces for function, I use them as a decoration. Although function is important in a piece, I prefer to focus on the sculptural aspects. Since I tend to be more focused on the sculptural aspects of pieces, I would most likely market myself as a sculptural ceramics artist. If I marketed myself as a functional ceramics artist, my work would not go as well with my title.
Prompt #4
If I was going to create a piece, I would make it into a container to put coins in. It would have a curvy shape, and a small top opening that you could not fit a hand into and could not see the money, so I would not take money out early. It would look like a face jug, but it would be an old man's face, and he would be wearing a monocle. This piece would also have a lid that would be the shape of a top hat. I would do this to inspire myself to keep saving money, so that maybe I could be that fancy one day and just to have fun. It would not be a very thick piece of pottery because one day I would want to smash it to take out the money, but I would still want it to be durable.
Cory Caramanico
Prompt 2
Sandi pierantozzi’s work is a teapot, most likely used to hold tea rather than boil it. To change the function dramatically, I could remove the spout, changing the teapot into a kind of cup. The stacked cups are exactly what they are named, stacked cups used to hold a drink. To change the function, I could give each cup a lid, changing the cup into a sugar container. the woven blue basket could be used to hold things like fruit. A change I could make would be to fill in the baskets holes, making it possible for the basket to hold liquids.
Prompt 3
I would focus on the more structural aspects of my work. I would do this because I want the person buying my work to have a use for it and not waste their money on something pretty. I would market my work as more functional. Most likely, I would show my work as something pretty to the eye, but very helpful in whatever it is doing. This would be the best plan of action for my work because it is pointless to market something as what it is not.
Carrie Black
Prompt # 2
The first piece I am choosing is the Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase. The function of this is obvious, since it’s a vase; to hold flowers. To change this function, all you’d have to do is cut it in half, and it would turn it into a bowl. The next piece I chose is Animal Pitcher. The function of this would be to use it as a pitcher for drinks, or even a watering can. To change the function, you could just close up the holes and remove the handle, and it could just be a sculpture. The last piece is the Teco Pottery Organic Vase. Again, the function is obviously to hold flowers. To change this function, the artist could’ve filled in the vase instead of letting it be hollow, and you could put a candle in it.
Prompt #3
If I were a potter, I would focus my art on the sculptural aspects more than the functional. This is because I think art is made for the eyes and should be fun or interesting to look at. I think art’s importance is creativity and looks and that is what I like about it. I think that art should be seen as whatever you want to see it as, so I don’t think functionality is very important. I would market my work as sculptural, not functional.
PROMPT #1
Stacked Cups- The function of these are to simply drink from and to stack easily, then creating a design. This is quite clever and honestly, cute in a way.
Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase- A vase is to simply put flowers in, which this vase is capable of doing so. It’s a soft green which is relaxing and would make just about any flower truly “pop” from it.
Sandi Pierantozzi – Teapot, again the function of this piece is quite obvious, a teapot. It has an elegant design, which really goes along with the thought of tea.
Ceramic Cookie Jar Tractor- At first, I didn’t know this was a cookie jar until reading its title. It’s a clever piece, which would fit in with anyone who was into landscaping of sorts.
Animal Pitcher- Though I do not know what type of animal this is for sure, it’s obvious to see this is a pitcher from the lip opening and handle. The creator may possibly take inspiration from animals for their work.
Manos Nathan - Ipu Manaia Parirau- Ipu, meaning vessel, is most likely something similar to a vase. At first, the exact function of this piece isn’t evident. The finish on this piece is absolutely beautiful though.
PROMPT #2
Teco Pottery - Organic Vase- As the title of this piece says, it is in fact a vase which would most efficiently be used for holding plants of any sort.
Form and Function - Woven Blue Basket- This piece could be used for holding many things. First thing that comes to mind is fruit to me though.
Form and Function - Greek Amphora with handles, in history Amphoras were mostly used for holding goods to transport, but during Greek Times, many people would decorate these amphoras. After being painted with elaborate pictures, the amphoras were usually used for aesthetics, but one can put things in them.

Prompt #2
Sandi Pierantozzi- teapot- This function of this pottery is to pour tea in a classy way! Something I would change dramatically to change the function would change the handles and the spout where the tea comes out of. The spout of the tea could be taken away you could add a handle, keep the top of the lid and turn it into a vase.
Melstrom Crystaline Glaze Green Vase- The function of this pottery is a vase which can hold flowers, straw etc. This vase could swop into a tea pot. The only thing you would have to do is add a handle or too and attach a spout to the top wear the flowers go.
Animal Pitcher- The function of the pottery is a pitcher which pours milk, lemonade, or any kind of drink in that sort. What I would change dramatically is transform the pitcher into a vase. Take away the handle and change the animal into a flower would give your pottery a different feel.
Prompt #4
One thing that I enjoy doing is getting my nails done and or having my nails done. Something that I would love to have is a vase/pitcher/teapot all put together. But there is a twist to it there must be a lid on top because one the inside it will be full of nail polish remover. On the sides there must be a dip where you can store your nail polish, nail files, and cotton balls. I would create this vase/teapot/pitcher
Shannon Kaminsky
Prompt 3:
If I was a potter, I would focus more on the sculptural aspects of the pot. Even if functional ceramic pieces are cool and interesting to make and use, I like sculptural better. I feel as if that would improve the view and texture of the pot. I would mark my work as a sculptural ceramic artist. I would mark it that way because I would want my work to be on display.
Prompt 4:
I would want to make the aspects pop out sort of like a 3D effect. That would make the pot look really good. The function of the pieces would just be for show. Since I would want to make the pot more 3D, I would only have 3 aspects pop out. Those 3 aspects would be the eyes, nose, and the mouth.
Ray Cessna
Prompt 2:The three pieces of artwork I chose are the animal pitcher, the Einstein teapot, and the stacked cups. The animal pitcher is probably one of the neatest pieces that are on the side. The top of the head is the opening to where the water comes out. The stacked cups is probably one of the neatest and most well put together piece of them all. Then there is the einstein teapot. This is very cool because it relates to what we are doing now and that is the african face jugs.
Prompt 3: If I were a potter, I would choose to be a sculptural ceramic artist. The reason for this is because i feel like for all of the areas of art and sculptural i feel like a sculptural ceramic artist is someone who uses there hands more then anyone in the art area. I would enjoy this because I enjoy sculpture and it is an area that is probably my strongest out of everything. I am very good at designing and planning things out which is why being this type of artist would be the best for me.
